India’s ODI opening batter Shikhar Dhawan has been one of the best in the format since making his comeback in 2013. He made his debut in 2010 and played five games till 2011. The left-hander didn’t have an impressive record at the time and was dropped from the team. In 2013, he made a comeback after Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir lost their place in the team.

The same year, he played in the Champions Trophy and was the highest-run getter of the tournament. A couple of years later, he was one of the highest run-getters in the ODI World Cup in Australia. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, the Delhi player was once again the highest run-getter. Talking about his ODI record, the former India U19 player has played 159 games and has 6651 runs at an average of 45.55 including 17 hundreds.

However, for some reason, his place is also under scrutiny even though he has been doing well at the age of 36. There is a section of former cricketers who feel that India might move on from Dhawan for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, former India cricketer Saba Karim feels that the selectors have decided to persist with Shikhar.

No need to put pressure on Shikhar Dhawan: Saba Karim

The former India wicketkeeper batter urged that there will a few games where Dhawan won’t score runs. The former believes there is no need to put pressure on him.

“Shikhar Dhawan’s place in the team has been confirmed. There’s no need to put pressure on him all the time. There will be one or two matches where he won’t score runs. I think the selectors have decided that Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan will be the openers in the next 50-over World Cup,” he said on India News.

Currently, Dhawan is leading India in the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa. The team is trailing by 1-0 and will play the second game on October 9 in Ranchi.
