Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan revisit Indian Team’s journey in 2023
Former Indian Cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan recently discussed the journey of the Indian cricket team as they went through ups and downs throughout the year in 2023. On a recent segment of the Star Sports network, Sunil Gavaskar appreciated both the men’s and women’s Indian cricket teams for their phenomenal performances throughout the year.
The Indian team went through a positive graph towards the beginning of the year as they sealed a victory against Australia and the border Gavaskar trophy. India then qualified for the finals of the World Test Championship which they unfortunately lost to Australia in the final match similar to the ODI World Cup 2023 finals. The highlight of the year for the Indian team was winning the Asia cup against the host nation Sri Lanka in their home.
On “Follow the Blues”, Sunil Gavaskar said, “I think it’s been a fantastic year for both the men’s and the women’s team, particularly the way the women’s team has performed.”

“Those two Test wins towards the year-end, one against England and one against Australia, both teams against whom the Indian women’s team have had tough times earlier on. That’s been the most exciting aspect of cricket apart from, of course, what we saw in the World Cup. The 10 straight wins, and, then, just that one bad day, which sadly happened to be the finals of the World Cup. So really, some exciting times in 2023,” Gavaskar said.
While taking the conversation forward, Irfan Pathan talked about India’s performance in ODIs and said, “I think it was an amazing year, the way they won matches. In ODIs, they had the highest win percentage in Indian cricket history. I think it was one of the best years of Indian cricket.”
“The World Cup victory again remained slightly away from us but overall there were a lot of positives. We saw Virat Kohli‘s form, which we were used to for so many years, and Shubman Gill had an amazing year,” Pathan added.
