Delhi faced Hyderabad in the 50th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The team batting first made the most of the ideal batting conditions and literally batted the opposition out of the match.

Hyderabad won the toss and decided to bat second in the match. Mandeep Singh making a comeback into the playing eleven of the Delhi team did not trouble the scorers. Bhuvneswar Kumar dismissed Mandeep (0 of 5) in the first over of the match and gave Delhi a shock at the start. David Warner however looked unfazed by the loss of his partner. He attacked the opposition bowlers and did not let the scoring rate drop for his team. Mitchell Marsh (10 of 7) and Rishabh Pant (26 of 16) got starts but were not able to convert it into something big.  Shreyas Gopal picked up the wicket of Rishabh Pant in the ninth over of the innings when Delhi’s score was 85 for 3. Rovman Powell came into the crease and joined David Warner at this stage.

From there on the duo annihilated the Hyderabad bowlers. They put up a partnership of 122 runs from just 66 deliveries. This stellar partnership put Delhi in the driver’s seat in the match. David Warner played a brilliant knock of 92 runs from 58 deliveries and hit 12 fours and three sixes during his stay. On the other end, Rovman Powell justified his reputation of being a big hitter scoring 67 runs off 35 deliveries. His knock comprised of three fours and six sixes. The two batters remained unbeaten till the end. On the back of the excellent partnership, Delhi posted a huge total of 207 runs for the loss of three wickets from their 20 overs.

Hyderabad was derailed very early in their chase. The man who has added dynamism at the top of the Hyderabad batting so far, Abhishek Sharma (7 of 6) was dismissed in the second over of the innings. Kan Williamson found it difficult to get going. He scored 4 of 11 deliveries and was dismissed in the fifth over by Anrich Nortje. Rahul Tripathi in an attempt to increase the scoring rate was dismissed in the seventh over. Hyderabad was struggling at this stage at 37 for 3. At the halfway stage of the chase, the Men in Orange were 63 for 3 down and had a lot of catch-up to do. Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram were at the crease in this stage and the onus of getting the team close to the target was on the duo.

Markram and Pooran were changing the complexion of the game with their brutal hitting. Markram (42 of 25) was looking in the sublime form before being dismissed in the 13th over by Khaleel Ahmed. Nicholas Pooran however continued with his aggressive approach and kept the hopes of his team alive.  At end of the 15th over Hyderabad was 134 for 5 needing 74 runs in the last 30 balls. Nicholas Pooran gave his best in trying to take his home. He scored a brilliant 62 of 34 balls hitting two fours and six sixes. But the catch up was too much even for him to achieve. Hyderabad ultimately finished with 186 for 7  from their 20 overs. Khaleel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi with three wickets for 30 runs from his 4 overs.  This was Hyderabad’s third consecutive defeat, while Delhi won their fifth match of the tournament from 10 matches.
