‘The day when crooks lifted WC’ – Fans react to fourth anniversary of 2019 ODI World Cup final between England and New Zealand

On this day in 2019, England were crowned as champions of the ODI World Cup for the first time in the history of cricket. They defeated New Zealand on the boundary counts as the super-over played between the two sides ended in a tie. This fixture is regarded as one of the greatest matches not only in the World Cup but also in the history of the sport.

Talking about the match, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat first. New Zealand posted a total of 241 runs in their 50 overs. The top scorer for their side was Henry Nicholls who scored 55 runs off 77 balls with four fours. Wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham scored 47 runs off 56 balls which included two fours and a six.

Ben Stokes plays rescue act for England

The pace duo of Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett stood out for the English side who snapped three wickets each in their respective spells conceding 37 runs in nine overs and 42 runs in his 10 overs respectively. One wicket each was grabbed by Jofra Archer and Mark Wood in their respective spell of 10 overs, conceding 42 runs and 49 runs respectively.

The Three Lions also scored the same amount of runs as the Kiwis in their 50 overs. The top scorer for the side was Ben Stokes, who played an unbeaten knock of 84 runs off 98 balls with five fours and two sixes. Jos Buttler also scored crucial 59 runs from 60 balls which included six fours. Since the match ended in a tie, the match went to a super over. England, with Stokes and Buttler on the crease, set a target of 16. New Zealand, with Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham, scored 15, drawing level with England yet again. However, England won the match because they had hit more boundaries in their regulation 50 overs.

Stokes was awarded the Player of the Match for his match-winning performance. Williamson was awarded the Player of the Tournament as he scored 578 runs and picked two wickets in the tournament.
