‘They have just pulled off another impossible’: Twitter turns hysterical as Gujarat win a last ball thriller against Hyderabad
Gujarat took on Hyderabad in the 40th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This was their second face-off in this edition of the tournament. The match turned out to be a high-scoring thriller as was expected at the venue.
Gujarat won the toss in the match and decided to field first. Hyderabad was rocked pretty early in their innings as they lost their skipper in the third over. Kane Williamson (5 off 8) was soon followed by Rahul Tripathi (16 0ff 10) and Hyderabad was down to 44 for two in the fifth over of the innings. But from this stage, Aiden Markram and Abhishek Sharma displayed excellent batsmanship and rescued their team from trouble. They did not get intimated by the situation and took the attack onto the bowlers. The dup put together a partnership of 96 runs from 61 deliveries before Abhishek Sharma (65 off 42) was dismissed in the 16th over of the innings.
Markram however continued at the other end and kept the innings together while the other batter lost their wickets in an attempt to increase the scoring rate. Markram was the fifth wicket to fall for Hyderabad at the score of 161 runs in the 17th over. He played a resilient knock of 56 runs off 40 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes.
Markram’s stable knock was backed by a quickfire cameo by Shashank Singh, who scored 26 runs off six deliveries. Shashank’s knock comprised of one four and three sixes and it helped Hyderabad to a big total of 195 runs from their 20 overs. Mohammed Shami was the highest wicket-taker for Gujarat with three scalps to his name, however, Yash Dayal was the most economical conceding 24 runs from his 4 overs.
Gujarat needed a solid start in their chase of the big target. The openers in Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha gave the team a beautiful start scoring 69 runs in just 7.4 overs. Gill (22 off 24) was the first wicket to fall for Gujarat but Wriddhiman Saha at the other end looked in supreme touch. Hardik Pandya (10 off 6) was unable to carry his form into the match as he was dismissed by Umran Malik. Gujarat was 85 for two down in the 10th over when David Miller joined Saha in the middle.
Saha was looking dangerous hitting all the bowlers of the opposition. But it was once again the sheer pace of Umran Malik that kept bringing Hyderabad back into the match. Maik bowled a sheering yorker to see the back of Saha (68 off 38) after he played a brilliant knock hitting 11 fours and one six. The dismissal of Saha meant that the match now majorly depended on David Miller for Gujarat to avoid their second defeat of the tournament. As the 15th over of the innings concluded Gujarat was stationed at 135 for 3 needing 61 runs off the last 30 balls.
Gujarat’s biggest hope at the stage was Miller and he was looking like setting himself up for the final onslaught. But it was Malik once again who gave Gujarat one more shock picking up the all important David Miller (17 off 19). The young speedster followed it up with the wicket of Abhinav Manohar of the very next legitimate delivery. Malik finished the night with amazing figures of five for 25 from his four overs. He nearly pocketed the match for Hyderabad, but Rashid Khan and Tewatia had other ideas. The duo scored 35 runs of the last 12 balls and pulled out victory from the hands of defeat. Marco Jansen conceded 25 runs off the last over as he was smashed for four sixes in the over. Rashid Khan remained unbeaten on 31 off 11 deliveries while Rahul Tewatia stayed not out on 40 off 21 balls. Gujarat won the match by five wickets in the last ball off the match. This turns out to be the seventh victory for Gujarat in the tournament.
.@SunRisers have managed to post a good total with the help of Abhishek Sharma, @AidzMarkram and some good power hitting by Shashank and Jansen in the last over. Will @gujarat_titans chase this down? I think they can. #SRHvGT #IPL2022
