‘Think Broadly’ – Fans Troll English Cricketers After Their Criticism For Deepti Sharma’s Mankading Incident

After sealing the series with two wins, India Women locked horns with England Women at the Lord’s on 24 September 2022. India Women were looking for a historic clean sweep on England’s home soil. While England Women were hoping to avoid such embarrassment in front of the home crowd. 

Meanwhile, it was the last match for India Women’s veteran bowler Jhulan Goswami. Therefore, the stage was set for her and the team India for a historical encounter. Speaking of the match, Amy Jones won the toss. Then, she asked India to bat first. However, India did not enjoy a great start as they only lost four wickets for 29 runs in 8.4 overs.

Fans came out to support Deepti Sharma amid criticism from English cricketers

England Women’s bowlers were running a riot. But, only two batters stood out for India in the match. Smriti Mandhana scored 50 runs off 79 balls, at a strike rate of 63.29. While Deepti Sharma scored 68* runs off 106 balls, including seven fours. Other batters failed miserably as India Women got bundled out for 169 runs in 45.4 overs. For England, Kate Cross was the star of the show. She took four wickets for 26 runs in her 10 overs. In reply, England batters also faced difficulties while chasing that 170-run target. Renuka Singh grabbed four wickets for 29 runs in 10 overs. Along with her, Jhulan Goswami also took two wickets in her last game.

But, England batters were fighting even after losing their nine wickets. But, in the 44th over, Deepti Sharma went for a mankading to dismiss Charlie Dean. During the third delivery of that over, Deepti did not complete his ball as she took the wicket at the non-striker end only. India Women won the match by 16 runs. But, that incident became the talk of the town. Some cricketers shared their views in support or against the Indian bowler. Especially, English cricketers came out to protest against such a mode of dismissal. They questioned the spirit of the game. In response to those, fans showed full support to Deepti Sharma on social media platforms as they trolled those cricketers.
