India’s former captain and president of the Indian cricket board, Sourav Ganguly recently gave a shocking revelation as he admitted that he didn’t remove Virat Kohli from the white ball captaincy. On the reality show Dadagiri Unlimited Season 10, Ganguly revealed that Virat was not keen on leading team India in the T20s, and Ganguly was not keen on having 2 white ball captains.

As per Ganguly, split captaincy in Whiteball Cricket could cause problems for all format players, hence, he decided to sack Virat from whiteball captaincy and push Rohit Sharma to be the captain even though the latter was reluctant. Later, Virat also stepped down from red ball captaincy, making Rohit Sharma the all-format captain of the Indian cricket team.

“I didn’t remove Virat from captaincy. I have told you this a lot of times. He was not interested in leading in T20Is. So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you’re not interested in leading in T20Is, it’s better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain”, revealed Sourav Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly on pushing Rohit Sharma to become the captain of the Indian team

Sourav Ganguly revealed that he forced Rohit Sharma to become the captain of the Indian team, he said, “I pushed Rohit Sharma a bit to take up the captaincy role because he wasn’t interested in leading in all three formats of the game. So, maybe I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating, it’s the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed as the President to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part of it.”

“Rohit [Sharma] didn’t want the captaincy because there was a lot of pressure on playing all formats – it had gone to a stage where I told him you have to say yes or I will announce your name. I am happy he has taken it. Now he is leading from the front and you guys can check the results,” said Sourav Ganguly.

“It’s a lot of time on the road. [He has a] young family, two young boys, plus he has played all his life. So, it’s not easy coaching, being on the road all the time. But he agreed, thinking about Indian cricket and I hope he will continue in the future because a coach needs to be given time. It is not magic that he will change his team in three, four, or five months. He needs to be given minimum time,” he added.
