‘Tu Joe Root thori hain’- Fans react as Steve Smith fears having to ‘bowl too much’ after Nathan Lyon’s injury in 2nd Ashes Test
Nathan Lyon got injured during the last session of day two of the second Ashes Test. According to Steve Smith, it does not show good signs for Australia’s chances for the rest of the game. Lyon’s 100th consecutive Test match for Australia was set to be a highlight of his career at the Lord’s Test. However, the off-spinner’s fortunes took a turn for the worst on Thursday.
Lyon suffered the injury while rushing in for a catch in the day’s last practice. After Duckett played the delivery from Green in the air, Lyon moved in from the deep fine-leg region to take the catch. The ball would end up falling short of the off-spinner, leaving him in discomfort and gripping his calf region. He walked off the field limping and did not return.
Smith said, “Hopefully I won’t have to bowl too much. I haven’t been up in the sheds yet, but obviously, it didn’t look good. It doesn’t look ideal for the rest of the game,” Steve Smith told reporters at stumps. “I’m not sure how he actually is. But obviously, if he’s no good, it’s a big loss for us,” continued the star Australia batter.
“He’s in his 100th consecutive Test match, which I know he was really looking forward to taking part in and having a role in as well. Fingers crossed he’s OK, but it didn’t look good.” After Travis Head bowled a couple of overs of spin right before him, Smith was left to bowl the final over of the day.
The Aussie batter added, “I thought Heady bowled alright. Heady’s probably the one that’s going to have a take a fair chunk of the spin, and then maybe myself and Marnus (Labuschagne) will chop in here and there.”
“However we’ve got Todd Murphy waiting in the wings. He’s been bowling beautifully in the nets.” “I’d be confident if he came in he’d do a terrific job for us. But fingers crossed Nathan’s alright.” Lyon had picked the wicket of Zak Crawley on day 2 and had bowled 13 overs and conceded just 35 runs.
