‘Tum log akele thodi khelte ho IPL’ – Fans react as Kagiso Rabada says South Africa will have an advantage in World Cup 2023 due to their experience in IPL
Speedster Kagiso Rabada of South Africa believes that because Proteas players have experience competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), South Africa will have an advantage going into the ODI World Cup in 2023. Given his skill as one of the top pacers in international cricket, Rabada, who played for Punjab Kings in the recently finished IPL 2023 season, has been a frequent participant in the lucrative tournament.
All of the Proteas players are now taking a break from cricket in preparation for South Africa’s match against Australia in August. Rabada is optimistic about a strong performance by his countrymen considering their prior IPL experience, despite the fact that the Proteas have yet to win any major competition thus far.
‘Playing in India is really tough as a fast bowler’ – Kagiso Rabada
“Playing in India is really tough as a fast bowler on some of those wickets,” said Rabada. “I guess the challenge now, at the age that I am, is to know the basic information that a newbie wouldn’t know. You are always learning and always looking to be as effective as you can be on different wickets,” the pacer added. “It is all about reading (the pitch) better and that is in combination with the goals that you set. Those two go in tandem – reading the conditions and executing your skills,” stated Rabada.
Since 2017, the South African great bowler has participated in 69 games and claimed 106 wickets. Rabada played for the Punjab Kings and joined the squad after fulfilling his commitments with the national team. He remained the second choice to Nathan Ellis and did not play too many games for the franchise. Ultimately, it was yet again a disappointing campaign for Punjab Kings as they could not advance into the playoffs.
“Heading into the World Cup in India, I do think that we have an advantage because we have played in the IPL for so many years. We have played at most of the grounds, if not all, so we understand those conditions,” concluded Rabada.

[…] Kagiso Rabada and KL Rahul were the stars of the first Day, as both of them performed well. Rabada was brilliant with the ball throughout the day. With the new ball, the star pacer got the big wicket of Rohit Sharma. He returned to his spell in the second session and proved to be even more threatening. With some support from the other end from Burger, Rabada bowled in full throttle. […]
