Twitter goes berserk as India women crush Pakistan eves in World Cup opener
India women continued their winning streak against Pakistan women and thrashed them by a whopping margin of 107 runs. After the heroics of the men’s team in the 20-20 World Cup versus India, where Pakistan won their first-ever World Cup match against their-arch-rivals, Pakistan women were hopeful of replicating the success of their men’s counterpart. However, that was not the case to be.
The Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and decided to bat first. With most of the top order failing, Smriti Mandhana (52 of 75 deliveries) kept the Indian batting effort together with Deepti Sharma’s support. The big names in the Indian batting order like Mithali Raj (9 of 36 deliveries) and Harmanpreet Kaur (5 of 14 deliveries) failed to put up any impact.
With India struggling at 114 for 6 at the 34th over of the innings, Sneh Rana and Pooja Vastrakar steadied the ship. While Sneh scored a counter-attacking half-century (53 runs of 48 deliveries), Pooja supported her, scoring a half-century (67 runs of 59 deliveries). The lower-order effort took India to a total of 244 runs in their 50 overs.
The pick of the Pakistani bowlers was Nashra Sadhu with 2 wickets for 36 runs of her 10 overs.
The Pakistan team came with a cautious approach with their opening pair putting up 28 runs in the first 11 overs. The Pakistan batters never got going. The highest scorer for the team was the opener, Sidra Ameen, scoring 30 runs off 64 deliveries. Except for her effort, no other batter really made a fight.
Rajeshwasri Gayakwad with his brilliant bowling figures of 4 for 31 in 10 overs got Pakistan off the track along with other Indian bowlers.
Meghna Singh took the final wicket of Diana Baig to dismiss the Pakistanis for 137 runs in 43 overs. This victory of India is the 11th over their arch-rivals in the same number of games.
Pooja Vastrakar received the Player of the Match for her brilliant batting display. With this victory, India began their World Cup campaign with a bang and announce themselves as a strong contender for the silverware in this edition of the tournament.
This is how Twitter reacted
