Delhi faced Lucknow in the 45th match of the Indian T20 League 20222 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Contrary to the last few matches in the tournament this match turned out to be a high-scoring thriller.

Lucknow won the toss and decided to bat first. Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul gave Lucknow a blazing start. De Kock scored a quickfire 23 of 13 balls before he was dismissed in the fifth over of the innings. The team’s score at the stage was 42 runs. Lucknow promoted Deepak Hooda up the order and he got together with the skipper KL Rahul to stitch together an important partnership for the team. Rahul and Hooda put together a partnership of 95 runs of 61 deliveries. Hooda (52 of 34) was the second wicket to fall for Lucknow in the 15th over of the innings with the team poised at 137 runs. The stage was set for Lucknow to maximize the death overs.

Rahul played a brilliant knock of 77 runs of 51 balls hitting four fours and five sixes. He was the third wicket to fall for Lucknow in the 19th over of the innings at the score of 176 runs. Marcus Stoinis (17 of 16) and Krunal Pandya (9 of 6) could provide the ideal finish to the team and they lost a bit of momentum towards the end of the innings. Lucknow posted a massive total of 195 runs from their 20 overs, but the total appeared 15 -20 runs short of what they could have achieved. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi picking up all the three wickets to fall.

Delhi had a poor start to their chase as they lost their openers very early. With David Warner (3 of 4) and Prithvi Shaw (5 of 7) back in the hut inside the third over of the innings, Delhi was reeling at 13 for 2. Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh however decided to counterattack the bowlers and started changing the complexion of the game. The duo put together a partnership of 60 runs of just 25 deliveries before Marsh was dismissed in the eighth over of the innings. The score of the team at this stage was 73 runs. Marsh’s dismissal was followed quickly by the wicket of Lalit Yadav. However, Rishabh Pant was looking determined and was tearing the bowler apart.

Rovman Powell joined forces with Pant and it looked like the duo will take the game away from Lucknow. But Rishabh Pant was dismissed in the 13th over by Mohsin Khan. He scored 44 runs off 30 deliveries hitting seven fours and one six. After the end of the 15th over, the score on the board for Delhi was 135 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. They required 61 runs of the last five overs. With Powell middling the ball and the likes of Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur still there, the target did not look impossible.

But it was young Mohsin Khan who changed complexion of the match and completely shifted the balance in Lucknow’s favor with a brilliant 17 over. He picked up the wickets of Powell and Shardul in the over and conceded just 4 runs of it. With 46 runs required of 18 deliveries and just three wickets remaining Delhi was far away form the target the equation proved to be too much for the lower order batters. Delhi finished at 189 runs and lost the match by 6 runs. Mohsin Khan was the pick of the bowlers for Lucknow picking up 4 wickets for 16 runs from his four overs. Lucknow won their seventh out of 10 matches in the tournament, while Delhi lost their fifth from nine matches.
