Mumbai faced Hyderabad in the 65th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. On a sporty wicket, the batters displayed the best of their skills to gift a high-scoring thriller to the fans.

Mumbai won the toss and decided to bowl first in the match. Hyderabad used a new man in Priyam Garg as the opening partner of Abhishek Sharma, while Kane Williamson demoted himself down the order. Though Abhishek Sharma (9 of 10) failed to fire, Garg looked the part from the very beginning of the innings. They lost their first wicket at the score of 18 runs in the third over of the innings. Rahul Tripathi and Priyam Garg stitched a dynamic partnership of 78 runs from 47 balls and got the innings going for their team. Garg (42 of 26) was the second wicket to fall for Hyderabad in the 10th over with the team’s score at 96 runs.

This partnership was followed by another important one by Nicholas Pooran and Rahul Tripathi. The duo formed a partnership of 76 runs from 42 balls and laid the foundation for a formidable total. Pooran was dismissed in the 17 the over after he played a knock of 38 runs off 22 balls. He was soon followed by Rahul Tripathi in the 18th over who played a brilliant knock of 74 runs from 44 balls. On the back of strong top-order performances, Hyderabad reached a total of 193 runs for the loss of 6 wickets from their 20 overs. Ramandeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai picking up three wickets for 20 runs from his 3 overs.

In response to the big target put up by Hyderabad, Mumbai started very steadily. They looked to preserve their wickets to go big later in the innings. In the first six overs, the duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan scored 51 runs without losing a wicket. By the end of the 10th over, Mumbai was stationed at 89 runs, and with 10 wickets in hand 105 runs off 60 balls looked achievable. However, they lost their first wicket in the form of Rohit in the 11th overs as Washington Sundar dismissed him at a score of 48 runs from 36 balls. The opening partnership worked 95 runs and put Mumbai in a position of strength. But after this the sheer pace of Umran Malik steam rolled through the Mumbai batting order. In a span of 4 overs Mumbai lost Ishan Kishan (43 of 34), Daniel Sams (15 of 11) and Tilak Varma (8 of 9). After 15 overs Mumbai was 127 for 4 needing 67 runs from 30 balls. A chase that was looking easy at the beginning started to look tough for Rohit Sharma’s men.

But Tim David had other plans. He hit T Natarajan for four sixes in the 18th over and was taking the match away from Hyderabad. But an unfortunate run out of the last ball of the over saw the back of David and the match was turning towards a nail-biting finish. But nothing can take anyway from the brilliant hitting Davdi exhibited. He scored 46 run of 18 balls hitting three fours and four sixes. An outstanding over from Buhvneswar Kumar followed the 26 runs overs of Natarajan. Bhuvi bowled a maiden wicket penultimate over. The target for Mumbai was now 19 runs of 6 balls with three wickets remaining. However, Fazalhaq Farooqi did a decent job and defended his team’s total. Mumbai was ultimately restricted to 190 runs and they lost the match by just three runs. Hyderabad won their 6th match in the tournament of 13 and kept their playoff hopes alive. It was Mumbai’s 10th defeat in the tournament.
