The 2011 World Cup victory will be etched in the memories of the Indian cricket fans forever. The fact that India won the title after a gap of 28 years made the occasion even more special.

Every moment related to the winning moment was special. The then Indian skipper MS Dhoni hit a six off Nuwan Kulasekera to take India home in the finals. The commentary from Ravi Shastri during the moment- “Dhoni finishes off in style….”, reverberates in every Indian cricket fan’s mind. Along with it the scenes of Sachin Tendulkar running into the ground with joy are also imprinted in our minds.

Virender Sehwag has shared a funny incident from the final match involving Sachin Tendulkar during a conversation with Cricbuzz. Sehwag said – “I’ll tell you a story about the 2011 World Cup final. Sachin Tendulkar was standing at deep square led. As the sun was setting, we noticed a lot of shine on the wicket. Both of us looked at each other and signaled that it will be fun to bat on this wicket. Neither of us scored runs.”

So, all the discussions that there’s heat, the wicket is flat, you win the toss and choose to bat…if you are in that patch where you can’t score runs, you won’t score runs. It’s as simple as that,”- Sehwag added.

Speaking of the match, Sri Lanka posted a total of 274 runs from their 50 overs on the back of a brilliant century by Mahela Jayawardene. The pitch looked like an ideal batting strip and there were large hopes for Sachin and Sehwag to give India a good start. However, Lasith Malinga picked both of their wickets and reduced India to 31 for two.

India’s innings was stabilized by Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli and the duo brought them back into the match. As Kohli walked back, MS Dhoni came into the crease and formed a match-winning partnership with Gambhir. While Gambhir scored 97 runs, MSD stayed unbeaten on 91 runs and took India to win. India won the match by six wickets and the title after a wait of 28 long years.
