WATCH: Andile Phelukwayo misses easy run-out chance to leave his teammates stunned
The 42nd game of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw South Africa take on Afghanistan in Ahmedabad. Hasmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose bat first and went in unchanged. South Africa made two changes as Andile Phelukwayo and Gerald Coetzee came in for Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen.
The South Africans had already reach the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. In their last game Temba Bavuma and his side had lost to India by a whopping margin of 243 runs in Kolkata.
Afghanistan on the other hand had lost their previous game to Australia by three wickets in Mumbai. At one stage the Aussies were 91/7 while chasing 292 runs on the board. Glenn Maxwell scored 201 not out to knock the hopes of the Afghanistan side to qualify for the semi-finals.
Andile Phelukwayo’s brain-fade moment costs South Africa dear–
South African all-rounder Andile Phelukwayo was bowling the third ball of the 23rd over to Azmatullah Omarzai. The Afghanistan all-rounder lofted the ball as it was reaching the ropes only for Temba Bavuma to stop the ball from going for a four.

Rahmat Shah was looking for a third run but Azmatullah Omarzai sent back his partner at the last moment. Andile Phelukwayo threw the ball from close quarters and yet missed the stumps and the chance of an easy run out was lost. This left the crowd and some of the South African players were in total shock.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz began the innings with his now patented fiery manner as he scored 25 runs off 22 balls. Ibrahim Zadran was his sedate self as he scored just 15 runs after his ton versus Australia.
Rahmat Shah Scored 26 runs while Hasmatullah Shahidi was out for just two runs. The South African bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals with Azmatullah Omarzai holding one end up.
The 23-year-old Azmatullah Omarzai scored his fourth ODI half-century to stay not out on 97. His knock came off 107 balls with the help of seven fours and three huge sixes. Noor Ahmed scored 26 key runs to help Afghanistan post 244 runs on the board. Gerald Coetzee was the lead wicket taker for South Africa taking 4/44 from his ten overs.
