WATCH: AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho throws his runners-up medal into the crowd after Europa League final defeat
After Sevilla defeated AS Roma 4-1 on penalties on Wednesday to win the trophy for a record-extending seventh time, Jose Mourinho, who had never lost a Europa League final, had to settle for his maiden runners-up medal. The game went into extra-time with the same score after the first 90 minutes of football finished in a 1-1 draw.
Gonzalo Montiel converted the game-winning penalty kick for Sevilla, precisely as he had done for Argentina in the World Cup final against France. Sevilla brutally punished the Italians in the shootout. As a result, following the presentation, Mourinho gave his medal to a supporter in the stands. “That’s what I did, I don’t want silver medals. I don’t keep silver medals, so I gave it away,” Mourinho was quoted as saying in Movistar.

I can’t say objectively that I will stay: Jose Mourinho
Mourinho admitted following the game that he was unsure about his future with the team.
“I have to fight for these lads and therefore not say objectively that I will remain. I spoke to the club in December when I had that approach from the Portuguese national team. have not had any contact with anyone else since then. I have a year left on my contract and this is the situation,” Mourinho was quoted as saying in Sky Sports Italia.
Mourinho was seen yelling at referee Anthony Taylor after the game as well. Taylor received too many yellow cards, Mourinho noted in his criticism of the Englishman.
“It was an intense, masculine, vibrant game with a referee who seemed Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time. We are accustomed to the influence of referees in our games, it’s nothing new, but I didn’t expect it in a European final,” the Roma manager asserted.
The former Premier League manager, who has recently been closely associated with Real Madrid and PSG, spoke briefly about his future in Rome as well.
“My future? I’m serious, I said a few months ago that if I had contact with any other club I would say it to the ownership, I wouldn’t do anything secretly. I talked to the club in December when Portugal asked about me, so far I haven’t talked to anyone because there is no team I’ve spoken to. I can’t say objectively that I will stay. I have another year of contract with Roma, the situation is clear,” the -year-old stated.
