Watch: Australian Player Takes ‘Catch Of The Summer’ During A Sheffield Shield Game, Leaves Everyone Stunned
At the Adelaide Oval, all-rounder Ben Manenti took an excellent catch to send Caleb Jewell back to the pavilion during the ongoing Sheffield Shield game between South Australia Redbacks and Tasmania Tigers.
The incident occurred during Tasmania’s 11th over. Pacer Harry Conway got one to move across southpaw Jewell, who tried to block it on the fifth delivery. Instead, he got a thick outside edge, and the ball went straight between the first and second slip.
Manenti, who was in the first slip, flew across the field to grab the ball in his left hand. Even the commentators were shocked at his reflexes and pointed out that he almost dived behind to complete the catch.
Journalist Scott Bailey posted the video of the cath on his Twitter handle, which has surfaced on the internet since. “Ben Manenti has just taken the catch of the summer in the Sheffield Shield. Video off Kayo,” he wrote in the caption of the video

Earlier, Jake Lehmann and Manenti each hit 50 to help the Redbacks reach 227. Following a top-order collapse, Lehmann smashed 73 with 10 fours, while Manenti smashed 59 with four fours and two sixes. Before the Redbacks made a strong comeback, Jackson Bird and Peter Siddle each had four wickets for the Tigers.
The Sheffield Shield season began earlier this month. Queensland currently leads the table after defeating Tasmania in their first match. Western Australia is second, having defeated New South Wales. Meanwhile, Victoria and South Australia are third and fourth, respectively, after a last-week draw. Notably, Western Australia is the Sheffield Shield defender, having defeated Victoria in the final last season.
In addition to Sheffield Shield, Australia is also hosting the ongoing 20-20 World Cup. The hosts also are the defending champions in the tournament. The team led by Aaron Finch is currently playing the warmup games before they begin their campaign against New Zealand on the 22nd of October.
