On December 10, Portugal played against Morocco, a team that was making its maiden quarterfinal in the FIFA World Cup 2022. In the game, the European side was the favorite given the kind of team they had. However, just as has been witnessed in the ongoing tournament, being the favorite doesn’t guarantee a win. The same thing was witnessed at the Al Thumama Stadium, in Doha.

For the Northern African outfit, Youssef En-Nesyri scored the match-winning goal in the 42nd minute of the game. Notably, his side had a ball possession rate of only 27 percent. However, they still managed to make the most of it. On the other hand, Portugal failed to score even though the likes of Gonalco Ramos (previous game hero) and Cristiano Ronaldo played in the game (as substitution though)

After the loss, Portugal has been knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 title race. After this, Ronaldo, who possibly played his last World Cup couldn’t hold his tears back as headed back to the dressing room.

On the other hand, Morocco has become the first African side to qualify for the semis. They will face the defending champions, France who beat England in the second quarterfinal of the day. It will be an interesting contest given that the Red Army has conceded only one goal in the entire tournament. They conceded the only goal in the game against Canada which they eventually won by 2-1 margin. Apart from that, teams have found it hard to score against them.

On the other hand, the defending champions would want to become the third team to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles. First team to do so was Italy which did it in 1934 and 1938. After them, Brazil won back-to-back titles in 1958 and 1962.
