In an effort to stop the disease from spreading on the pitch during the Covid-19 pandemic, several new rules were introduced. In order to stop the bowlers from using saliva to polish the ball, the Apex Cricket Council outlawed it in 2022, changing one of the game’s regulations in the process. After the implementation of the regulation, players were no longer permitted to use their saliva to generally swing the ball but were instead allowed to use their sweat in its place. Amit Mishra, a seasoned spinner, was observed attempting to spit on the ball.

When their opponents RCB were still batting in the first innings, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner was seen on video shining the ball on the first delivery of the 12th over. When Virat Kohli of the RCB was bowled to, the 40-year-old was captured on video salivating the ball, which the former India captain hit to deep point for a single.

Then, in the third delivery of the over, Mishra removed Kohli. Kohli received a short ball, which the batter attempted to pull but was only able to send to deep midwicket, where Marcus Stoinis took a catch. With four fours and four sixes in the 44 balls, Kohli scored 61 runs. Before Covid-19 started, the ICC had already banned the use of saliva, even in the IPL. Kohli was caught salivating on the ball even in IPL 2020 after saving a shot at short cover. The 35-year-old instantly realized his error, smiled, and raised his hand to indicate that much.

Mishra has violated the prohibition on salivation before. While representing Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021, Mishra unintentionally put saliva on the ball. Rishabh Pant, the captain of the Delhi Capitals, received the first warning from on-field umpire Virender Sharma following the incident.

LSG paid 50 lakhs for Mishra in the IPL 2023 Auction. His expertise would be beneficial to KL Rahul and the company, and it could be the key factor in LSG buying him. Mishra has taken 168 wickets in 155 IPL games, with four four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul. He is also fourth on the list of IPL history’s all-time wicket takers.
