WATCH : Mitchell Starc begins ODI World Cup 2023 campaign with hat-trick against Netherlands in warm-up match

Australia and Netherlands recently encountered each other in the 5th Warm-Up match of ODI World Cup 2023 on 30 September, Saturday in Trivandrum. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, and aimed to set a high target on the board. Australia’s plans were dismissed as rain played spoilsport and the match was reduced to 23 overs.  

The Australian batters Steve Smith and Cameron Green scored 55 and 34 runs off 42 and 26 deliveries with a strike rate of 130.95 and 130.77, respectively. The top-order batter Steve Smith hit 4 fours and 3 sixes to lead Australia to a score of 166-7. 

The Netherland’s batters Vikramjit Singh and Max ODowd took on the strike to bat and the Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc dismissed Max ODowd on the 5th delivery of the first over for a duck. Wesley Barresi came to bat on the last ball of the first over and got bowled for a duck as well. In the third over, as Mitchell Starc came back to the attack, he dismissed Bas de Leede on the first ball to take a striking first hat-trick of the season of world‘s biggest cricket tournament, the ODI World Cup 2023.

Australia will open their campaign against India on October 8

The ODI World Cup’s most successful team, Australia announced their presence in the tournament with style as Mitchell Starc commenced the season with a hat-trick and gave the rest of the teams a heads up that Australia is in the game and is in a good position despite multiple injuries in their camp. 

Rain again played spoilsport, and the match was abandoned and declared as ‘no result’ and Netherlands could play only 14.2 overs.  They scored 84 runs after losing six wickets. The team’s middle order batsman Colin Ackermann became the highest scorer for the team by scoring 31 runs off 37 deliveries respectively. Since the game in Kerala was the practice match for the ODI World Cup 2023, there were no points awarded to either teams.
