In the 69th match of the Indian T20 League 2022, Mumbai faced Delhi at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Besides the two teams playing in the match, the interests of another team were involved in this match. Bangalore was keeping a keen eye on the contest and hoping for a Mumbai win in the match. As that would have meant that Bangalore qualifies for the playoffs, while Delhi gets eliminated from the tournament.

Mumbai won the toss in the match and decided to field first. While setting up a target for Mumbai, Delhi kept losing wickets from the beginning of the innings and was put off track. By 8.4 overs, Rishabh Pant’s side was left reeling at 50 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. But it was on the back of Rovman Powell (43 off 34) and Rishabh Pant’s (39 off 33) batting efforts that Delhi was able to reach a total of 159 runs from 20 overs.

It was during Mumbai’s chase that the cricketing world remained witness to a rare incident. Mumbai generally follows a huge fan base and with the match being played at Wankhede Stadium, it was expected that the crowd will be cheering for the home team. But during the 17th over of the chase, Mumbai was stationed at 131 for 3 needing 29 runs off 18 balls. It was at this stage that the crowd was heard chanting “Bangalore”, as Mumbai’s win meant that Faf du Plessis’ men will be in the playoffs.

Speaking of the match as the required run rate started to go beyond 10 runs per over, Tim David played an explosive knock of 34 runs off 11 balls and took Mumbai over the line. With that Delhi got eliminated and Bangalore made it to the top four. They will now be facing Lucknow in Eliminator on 25th May at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Bangalore will have to spot on with their performances from here on as they need to win three straight matches to lift their maiden Indian T20 League title.
