For the first time since 2016, India is looking to host a World Championship. More than six years back, India hosted the 20-20 World Cup, won by the West Indies. Not to forget, in 2011, the Indian team won the ODI World Cup at home. Meanwhile, it looks like the Indian Cricket Board is set to lose the hosting rights of the next year’s World Cup.

Apparently, the World Cricket Governing Council isn’t happy with the Indian Cricket Board regarding taxation. After all, the Indian Cricket Board hasn’t been able to secure tax exemption. At this point, the Apex Council and the Indian Board are going loggerheads over the matter. Notably, the Indian Board had lost Rs 190 crore from the annual share after they failed to secure tax exemption during the 2016 20-20 World Cup.

A source has said that if India loses the revenue, it might be a legal battle between the Apex Council and the Indian Board.

“It’s Indian Cricket Board’s money. If the World Cricket Governing Council can’t settle this issue before the World Cup arrives and end up deducting it from India’s revenue share from the ICC, even this will end up in a legal battle,” News18 quoted sources.

Can’t give tax exemptions to the Cricket World Cup: Reports

On the other hand, another source reacted on the matter. He said that it is difficult to provide tax exemption to a sport that makes the most money in India. He added that there is no chance of tax exemption.

“What will the government tell its tax-paying citizens? That the only sport in this country that earns money will be exempt of taxes? How well will that sit? There’s no way the government will say anything on this,” sources told News18.
