‘Yaar mat jaao Warner, abhi toh jawaan ho tum’ – Fans react as David Warner announces potential retirement date
David Warner, 36, has had a challenging tour in India previously this year, and despite leading Delhi Capitals to victory in the IPL with 516 runs from 14 games, he will face a challenge against the seaming English surroundings.
Warner has struggled to score runs in recent duties, making just 26 runs across three Test innings during his most recent trip of India before heading home injured. Warner’s only notable performance in recent assignments is a superb double century versus South Africa last December. Additionally, he had a miserable Ashes series, returning with a 9.50 average, the worst mark ever for an opener who played in 10 innings when England’s quick Broad dominated the Australian opener.
David Warner spoke to cricket.com.au and discussed his potential retirement date. He said, “If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series I will definitely finish up then. I probably owe it to myself and my family – if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia – I can definitely say I won’t be playing that West Indies series.”
The opener, who will begin Australia’s six-Test tour to the United Kingdom at the top of the batting order, acknowledged he must perform better than he did on his most recent trip to England during the 2019 Ashes when he averaged less than 10
After admitting he became mired in a pessimistic frame of mind after the 2-2 series stalemate, he has resolved to play with greater aggression this time. He is hoping that his recent achievements in the Indian Premier League would carry over to his long-form batting. Warner is still one of the best T20 batters in the world, and he is hoping that will help him make it to the World Cup under this format next year. Additionally, he hopes to participate in the ODI World Cup late this year in India.
Warner cleared his mind and stated that he would be willing to play in the T20 World Cup in 2024. He said, “I want to play that 2024 World Cup. It is something that is on the back of my mind. We’ve got a lot of cricket before that, and then I think it stops from February.”
