On Wednesday, February 28, the Indian cricket board announced the annual retainership for senior men’s team cricketers for the 2023-24 cycle. In a significant decision, the national body excluded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the annual retainership contract list, despite both players featuring in India’s ODI World Cup campaign last year.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja retained their positions in the top bracket (A+) among the 30 players included in the central contracts list. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were omitted from the annual retainership contract due to their limited participation in the ongoing domestic cricket season, despite directives from the board and its secretary Jay Shah. In the previous season, Ishan Kishan was in Grade C, while Shreyas Iyer held a Grade B position in the retainership contracts for the 2022-23 season.

“Please note that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations,” the India Cricket Board said in a statement.

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul earned promotion in the contract

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill have been promoted, while Hardik Pandya remains in the Grade A bracket despite not being available for Test cricket selection. Despite leading India in 11 T20I matches in 2023 and being seen as Rohit Sharma’s successor, Pandya’s injury during the World Cup and subsequent absence has caused him to fall down the pecking order. Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India in 8 T20Is during 2023-24, maintains his Grade B position.

In addition to this, the standout performer in India’s series victory over England, Yashasvi Jaiswal also have entered the central contracts list directly in Grade B. Players meeting the criteria of participating in a minimum of 3 Tests, 8 ODIs, or 10 T20Is within the specified period are automatically included in Grade C on a pro-rata basis. Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this exclusion of Iyer and Kishan from the central contract;
