Former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir has applauded Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for backing KL Rahul continuously despite his poor form in recent times. Gambhir said that Rohit also struggled at the start of his career and talked about his performances after that. Rahul’s form has been concerning for team Indian in recent times. He hasn’t been able to contribute in India’s wins in the first two Tests against in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In his last 10 Test innings, Rahul hasn’t been able to cross 25 runs once. He also maintained a poor average of 12.5. Gambhir, who is also the mentor of the Lucknow franchise in the Indian T20 League said that the 31-year-old should not be dropped from the Indian team, and he should be left alone as India are leading in the Test series by 2-0.

“KL Rahul should not be dropped from the Indian side. One should not single out any player. Everyone goes through a lean patch. No one, no cricket pundit or anyone should tell him that he is not doing well and should be dropped,” said Gambhir in an interaction during the pre-season organised by the Lucknow franchise ahead of the Indian T20 League.

“You have to back players who have talent. Look at Rohit Sharma… He also had a lean patch. Look at the way he started his career. Everyone could see his talent and backed him. Now see the result. Rahul can do the same,” the former cricketer further added.

Earlier, Rohit also stated that the team is backing Rahul as they are aware of his capabilities. India’s skipper stated that it’s not easy to score on these pitches and one has to find a way to score runs. Rohit also mentioned his contribution in overseas.

“Of late, there has been a lot of talk about his batting. For us, as team management, we always look at the potential of any individual, not just KL. I was asked in the past about a lot of players. If a guy has potential, he will get an extended run. Not just KL. If you look at the couple of hundreds he got, especially at Lord’s, batting on that damp pitch. Centurion was another win. Both came in India winning both games. That’s the potential he has,” Rohit said during the press conference after the Delhi Test.
