Sri Lanka hammered the England Cricket Team on Thursday to win the game in Bengaluru by 8 wickets. It was a miserable day on the field for Jos Buttler and his men as they now have lost four games out of the five played in the ODI World Cup 2023.

The English team came into the game after a huge loss to South Africa by 229 runs last Saturday in Mumbai. The Sri Lankans meanwhile had posted a comfortable five-wicket win against the Netherlands in Lucknow over the weekend.

Angelo Mathews was back for Sri Lanka along with Lahiru Kumara who replaced Chamika Karunaratne and Dushan Hemantha. Buttler had won the toss and chose to bat first with huge runs on offer at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. England made three changes with Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, and Liam Livingstone replacing Reece Topley, Gus Atkinson, and Harry Brook.

Sri Lanka hammers England by eight wickets –

The Sri Lankans came out to bat with just 157 runs needed for a win from their 50 overs. David Willey gave the English team and its fans some hope by claiming two early wickets. Kusal Perera was caught by Stokes for 4, while Kusal Mendis fell for 11.

With the score reading 23/2, there would have been slight nerves in the Sri Lankan camp. That was put to rest thanks to Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama. The two youngsters added an unbeaten stand of 137 runs for the 3rd wicket to guide their team to win. The Lankans won by 8 wickets and had 24 overs left to play as they now have gone to 5th in the table.

England began well with the bat as Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow took the attack to the opposition. Once the 45-run opening stand was broken, the Sri Lankan bowlers and fielders were all over the English.

Joe Root and David Willey were run out due to some smart work from the Sri Lankan team. Angelo Mathews playing ODI cricket after 4 months got two wickets for just 14 runs from 5 overs.

Lahiru Kumara showed his class as he picked 3 wickets for 35 runs from his 7 overs. Ben Stokes was the only silver lining with the bat as he scored 43 runs from 73 balls with 6 hits to the fence. It is safe to say the 2023 ODI World Cup campaign is all but over for the defending World Cup champions.
