Delhi faced Punjab in the 32nd match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The match turned out to be a very one-sided affair as Delhi outplayed Punjab in all aspects of the game by a long way.

Delhi won the toss and decide that they will field first in the match. Punjab had an electric start to their innings as their skipper Mayank Agarwal blazed away at the beginning. However, Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed in the fourth over of the innings when the team’s score was 33 within the fourth over. As Dhawan walked back the top order of the team collapsed very quickly. They lost their next three wickets for just 21 runs and were reduced to 54 for four in the seventh over of the innings.

Shahrukh Khan and Jitesh Sharma steadied the ship of the team somewhat as they stitched a partnership of 31 runs. But Jitesh Sharma (32 off 23) was dismissed in the 13th over of the innings by Axar Patel. Punjab’s score at this stage was 85 for 5, and they required a resilient effort from the lower order to put up a respectable total on the board. Instead the team experienced another collapse losing their last six wickets for just 30 runs. At the end of the 20 overs they were just able to score 115 runs losing all their wickets. The whole bowling unit of Delhi looked in great form as Khaleel Ahmed, Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each. Punjab’s strategy to go all guns blazing with the bat backfired for them in this match.

Delhi made no fuss in chasing the small total and had a flying start to their innings. Openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw put their foot on the accelerator from the very beginning. The Punjab bowlers were never allowed time to settle down as they were thrashed to all parts of the ground by Delhi’s opening duo. They scored 81 runs in the powerplays without losing a wicket and the match was already in their pockets. Prithvi Shaw (41 off 20) was disimissed by Rahul Chahar in the seventh over, but it was of no consequence with respect to the match. David Warner continued his onslaught and stormed his team to a convincing victory by 9 wickets with nine and a half overs to spare. Warner butchered the Punjab bowlers to score 60 runs off 30 balls hitting 10 fours and a six in his knock. This is Delhi’s third victory of the campaign in six matches, while Punjab lost their fourth match in the seven they have played.
