‘Yeh toh hona hi tha ‘ – Fans react to New Zealand winning their third game of ODI World Cup 2023 after beating Bangladesh by 8 wickets
Match number 11 of the ODI World Cup 2023 was played in Chennai between New Zealand and Bangladesh. The Kiwis had won their first two games of the campaign by beating England and the Netherlands.
Bangladesh on the other hand had played two games and won their opening contest against Afghanistan. In the second game Shakib AL Hasan and his side went down to England by a huge margin for 137 runs.
This was the first time both the teams were playing in Chennai. Kane Williamson was back at the helm and he won the toss and chose to bowl. Williamson replaced opener Will Young with Rachin Ravindra opening the batting. Bangladesh also made one change with Mahmudullah coming in for Mahedi Hasan.
New Zealand canter home to easy win in humid Chennai
Put into bat, Bangladesh lost the first wicket of Litton Das in the very first ball of the game. Das was out for a duck when he was caught by Matt Henry off Trent Boult. Tanzid Hasan was the next to go for 16 when he was caught by Devon Conway off Lockie Ferguson.
From 40/1 it was 56/4 when Lockie Ferguson got the wicket of Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 30. Glenn Phillips then struck of his first ball getting Shanto out for 7 as the Bangladeshis were in trouble.
It took a 96-run stand between Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim to pull the Bangladesh team out of trouble. The Bangladeshi skipper scored 40 runs before becoming the third wicket of Ferguson.
The top scorer was Mushfiqur Rahim with 66 runs off 75 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Mahmudullah scored 41 runs lower down the order to help Bangladesh reach 245/9 from their 50 overs.
Chasing 246 to win, New Zealand lost Rachin Ravindra early for 9 caught by Rahim off Mustafizur Rahman. Local CSK boy Devon Conway scored 45 before falling LBW to Shakib AL Hasan.
Kane Williamson retired hurt due to cramps after scoring 78 runs from 107 balls with 8 fours and a six. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips then saw the team home to post an easy win. Mitchell was not out on 89 as he sealed the win with a six to win with the game with 43 balls left to play.
