‘You have a reason to fire him now’: Twitter lashes out at Sunil Gavaskar for his unpleasant comment on Shimron Hetmtyer’s wife

The former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has found himself on the wrong side of discussions because of a comment he made on Shimron Hetmyer’s wife during the Rajasthan and Chennai match. Gavaskar has often been acclaimed for his explanation of the technical aspects of the game. But sometimes it is his cheeky comments that have got him in trouble.
Notably, the 68th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 between Chennai and Rajasthan marked the return of Shimron Hetmyer to the Rajasthan squad. He left the camp after Rajasthan’s match against Punjab and went back to Guyana for the birth of his first child. When Hetmyer came in to bat for his team in the last match, the Men in Pink needed 47 runs off 31 balls to win the match. This is when Gavaskar tried to be humorous and ended up making a distasteful comment which irked the netizens.
While commentating, Gavaskar ended up saying – “Hetmyer’s wife delivered; will Hetmyer deliver for Rajasthan now?” Fans immediately took to Twitter and lashed out at Gavaskar for his comments. Several fans even urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ban him from taking further part in the commentary.
Speaking of Hetmyer’s performance in the match, it was one of those rare days where he failed to score something significant. He was looking good when he slammed a boundary down the ground, but soon became a victim of the leg-spinner Prashant Solanki. He was just able to score 6 runs of 7 deliveries. His dismissal left Rajasthan in trouble, however, Ravichandran Ashwin got Rajasthan across the line playing an excellent knock of 40 runs off 23 deliveries. Ashwin’s antics ensured that Rajasthan bagged the second spot in the points table.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Gavaskar has faced the flog from the spectators for his undue comments. During the 2020 season of the Indian T20 League, the former opener commented on Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma, while speaking of the batter’s performance. While the comments did not go down well with the fans in that instance also, Anushka Sharma also slammed the opener for his ‘sexist’ comment.
