‘You want to lead from the front’ – Jos Buttler on continuing captaincy for England after ODI World Cup 2023
England won their 2nd game of the ODI World Cup 2023 as they beat the Netherlands by 160 runs. The defending champions have not had a good season in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they have only two games against Netherlands and Bangladesh. The English captain Jos Buttler has faced a lot of criticism for England’s poor performance in the tournament.
With a fear of getting sacked as the captain Jos Buttler has expressed his desire to continue as the team’s captain in the White ball Cricket. He recently talked about wanting to lead from the front in England’s upcoming tour in the Caribbean.
“I’d like to [lead in the Caribbean]. I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I’d like to. You want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance,” Jos Buttler told Sky Sports.
“I’ll stick to the stuff that’s served me well over a long period of time when I’ve had these little runs of form and hopefully I’ll come out the other side of it very soon,” he said.

“If you watched training yesterday, the guys probably trained as hard as they have trained all trip, which shows the level of commitment and desire to put things right. It would be easy for us to tail off… credit to everyone for still putting [effort] in and showing how much it means to play for England and the pride in our performance. Of course, the Champions Trophy is something we’re very focused on and determined to make sure we’re there,” added Jos.
After finally winning their second match in the ODI World Cup 2023, in the post-match ceremony Butler said, “Absolutely desperate for the win. Malan got us off to a flier. The partnership between Stokes and Woakes was fantastic. Anytime you need someone to stand up, he (Stokes) seems to be the guy to do that. Smart cricket between him and Woakes. Thought it was a good score. But everyone who batted said it was a good pitch.”
“The toss – you got to play good cricket as well. Can look back and say might’ve done different but you have to play good cricket too. He’s a class cricketer (Woakes), been a brilliant performer for us. It was high-class swing bowling, deserved more than one wicket that he got. Huge game (Pakistan). At the end of a disappointing tournament it means a lot”, he added.
