3 auctioneers who have hosted IPL auctions in past
1. Richard Madley
Richard Madley was the auctioneer in the IPL for the first 10 seasons of the league. To date, the British auctioneer remains the one with the highest experience in hosting the auctions of the biggest cricket league. It was he who held the brass gavel for the first time in the history of the IPL in 2008. Till 2017, Madley was the auctioneer of the league. Many loved his presence in the auctions till then and genuinely missed him when replaced by Edmeades in 2018.
For his charm as an auctioneer, Madley was known as ‘Hammer man’. When asked about the IPL auction once, he had said, “My father was an auctioneer and taught me always to remember the three F’s – a good auctioneer should be Firm, Fair & Friendly. These are the three elements I try to embrace when conducting the IPL Auction. Despite the pressure of being the only ‘umpire’, I do want people to see that I’m human after all.” Richard is an auction expert for a BBC show named ‘Bargain hunt’, which was one of the most popular shows in Britain.
