FIFA World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez promises to bring Argentina star Lionel Messi to India
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has stated that the next time he visits Kolkata, he will invite Lionel Messi to play. Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper and Golden Gloves winner at the FIFA World Cup 2022 was honoured with lifetime memberships in both the renowned Mohun Bagan and East Bengal football teams during a historic visit to Kolkata.
Martinez engaged himself in Kolkata’s rich football culture, delighting supporters with his presence and expressing his amazement at the warm reaction he got. Fans went to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in significant numbers. It was to catch a glimpse of the World Cup hero from Argentina. He visited two public events during his visit, including Milan Mela Prangan and the Mohun Bagan Camp. He was also given Hilsa and shrimp (Chingri) fish, which have significant importance for both the East Bengal and Mohun Bagan teams, signifying their distinct identities and legacies.

I’m walking today through the streets, and going in the car through the streets today made me realize how beautiful this country is and how pleased I am to be here. So, thank you very much for coming, Let’s enjoy the show and this is not over. I want to bring Messi to play here in India.”
Messi previously visited Kolkata in 2011 as part of Argentina’s FIFA international friendly match against Venezuela. Surprisingly, that encounter marked Messi’s debut as Argentina’s national team captain. Despite failing to score, Messi mesmerised the sold-out Salt Lake Stadium with his outstanding talents. He assisted on a corner kick that led to Nicolas Otamendi’s game-winning header. The three-time World Champions triumphed with a 1-0 score.
