Ahead of the prestigious Asia Cup 2023, India head coach Rahul Dravid addressed a press conference in Alur on Tuesday. In the shocking turn of events, Dravid informed the media that wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul is yet to be fit for the tournament and will not travel with the team to Sri Lanka.
According to Dravid, Rahul is doing well in practice sessions and looking in good touch, but he is far from gaining match fitness. Dravid also informed that Rahul will undergo some match simulation and other practice sessions at the National Cricket Academy, while the Indian team travels to Sri Lanka for the Kandy leg of the tournament.
“KL Rahul is progressing really well but will not be available for India’s first two matches—against Pakistan and Nepal—of the Asia Cup under Head Coach Rahul Dravid”, the Indian Cricket Board tweeted while quoting head coach Rahul Dravid from a press conference. Dravid further said that the team hopes that Rahul’s injury lasts just two games.
Who will be India’s wicketkeeper-batsman in the absence of KL Rahul?
India has picked two wicketkeeper-batters in their 17-member Asia Cup squad. In the absence of KL Rahul, team management is likely to go with Ishan Kishan. However, his performance and experience at number 4 are horrible, and it might impact India’s combinations ahead of the ODI World Cup. However, the team also has Sanju Samson as a travelling backup, and they might rope him into the squad.
It means if Sanju Samson makes it to the main squad, India will have to rule out KL Rahul for the entire tournament. This will not be great news for team management, as KL Rahul has been phenomenal with the bat at number 5 in one-day internationals. His missing the tournament is very concerning and confusing for Indian team management.
