‘Medal ki jagah thappad padegi aaj’ – Fans react to India’s poor fielding in match against New Zealand in ODI World Cup 2023
Indian fielding had a rare off day against New Zealand in the ODI World Cup 2023. In fact, it was surprising that the fielders were not able to take sitters in the field, particularly after starting the match with a brilliant catch. Shreyas Iyer took a fabulous catch to get rid of Devon Conway. But after that, the Indian fielders were rather abysmal with their efforts in the field.
Rachin Ravindra was given a life in the early stage of the match. Before he crossed the 20-run mark, there was a chance for Ravindra Jadeja to make an impact in the match with his fielding efforts. Jadeja, who was stationed in the point region, had the easiest of chances to claim a catch. But it was an off day and Jadeja surprisingly dropped the catch.
Ravindra went on to score more than 70 runs. In fact, Rachin got another life when Bumrah could not claim a catch. In the over of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra hit the ball straight to the fielder stationed at long-on. Bumrah had to move a bit to his left, which he did. But the Indian cricketer could not grab the catch. In the process, Indian fielders gave a second life to Ravindra.
Good comeback from Indian fielders against New Zealand
Soon after the dropped catch, Jasprit Bumrah was sent to the third-man region. He was stationed inside the circle. Rachin then tried to overcome a yorker of Siraj. The ball took the outside edge of Ravindra’s willow and started travelling towards the boundary ropes. Bumrah made an effort and could have well stopped the ball from reaching the boundary.
But Bumrah opted to not make an effort to stop the ball fearing injuring himself. Although it was a good move to take care of himself to avoid the injury, the ball travelled to the boundary. On a day where Iyer took a fabulous catch, a day where Kohli went on to take a couple of good catches, India’s fielding fell short of the standards they set for themselves.
Here’s how the fans reacted to the fielding of India –

So New Zealand is on to Indian nerves and wrecked nerves, causing 2nd catch to be dropped. Bumhra this time.
Finally, Shami gets his due, and Gill holds on!

[…] Notably, Mohammed Shami is playing his first game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 20, 2023. Shami wasn’t able to place himself in India’s starting lineup due to the solid form of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. The right-arm pacer got the nod as the replacement for Shardul Thakur in the game. India’s all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s injury made his way into the squad along with Mumbai Indians star Suryakumar Yadav in the clash against New Zealand. […]
