‘One of the greatest opener of this generation’ – Fans react as David Warner announces retirement from ODI Cricket

Australia’s attacking opening batsman David Warner has recently announced his retirement from the one-day international format just before the final match of his farewell Test series against Pakistan. While reflecting back on his career and his journey in the ODIs, David Warner officially announced his decision in the prestigious Sydney cricket ground on The New Year, 1st Jan 2024, Monday.

While talking about his further availability, David Warner admitted that if he is doing fine in Cricket next year in 2025 and the teams need someone like him for the champion trophy he will be back for the tournament, which will be hosted by Pakistan. He also talked about Australia winning the ODI World Cup 2023 in India which made him get a strong grip on his decision.

David Warner reflects on his ODI career while announcing his retirement from the format

While announcing his retirement David Warner said, “I’ve got to give back to the family and also on the back of that I’m definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well. That was something that I had said through the (2023) World Cup, get through that, and winning it in India, I think that’s a massive achievement.”

“So I’ll make that decision today, to retire from those forms, which does allow me to go and play some other (Twenty20) leagues around the world and sort of get the one-day team moving forward a little bit. I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up. If I’m playing decent cricket in two years’ time and I’m around and they need someone, I’m going to be available,” he said.

“I would have never imagined opening the batting for New South Wales or anyone to be honest when I first started but to be here, 112 Tests I think, I still pinch myself.” Warner further discussed that he would like to be remembered as someone “authentic and honest” who has “gone out there and given it his all”.
