Aakash Chopra suggests ideal number 4 candidate for India in ODIs
There has been a constant discussion over the ideal batsman who can take forward the innings for the Indian cricket team from the number four spot. With the availability of plenty of attacking batsmen, the Indian cricket team has always juggled between all of them and has not found a fixed number of four batsmen.
Recently, the Indian cricket team registered an incredible victory in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, where in the young Mumbai Indians, star batsman, Tilak Varma showcased a brilliant performance, which made the cricket experts believe that he can be an ideal candidate as a middle order batsmen for the Indian cricket team in the future.
Former Indian cricketer, Pragyan Ojha recently tweeted “Is there a possibility of expediting #TilakVarma’s inclusion to help settle the number 4 debate for #TeamIndia in ODIs? He appears promising, displays strong composure, and adds the advantage of being a left-handed batsman. #WIvsIND #sabjawaabmilenge #JioCinema”.
Former Indian opening batsman and famous commentator Aakash Chopra agreed with Pragyan Ojha’s statement and believes Tilak Varma can be tried for the number four spot after Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.
Aakash Chopra on Tilak Varma’s inclusion in the Indian cricket team
“Generally, we tend to forget people who are not there. This has been a continuous debate happening around the No. 4 position. We even talked about it during the ODI series. We saw three different batters at that position, Axar Patel was also tried at that position, even though he wasn’t a candidate for that position. At that time, we were still discussing Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul, right? When they are back, I think Tilak must wait. But at this point in time, if we don’t see them, then why not, Tilak can be tried,” said Aakash Chopra.
“He has successfully ticked all the boxes, and the most impressive aspect of his batting lies in his fearless approach right from the first ball. He doesn’t merely swing for the sake of swinging; instead, he evaluates where to place the ball. His profound understanding of the game, including its pace and rhythm, enables him to take calculated risks,” said RP Singh.
“I feel he is prepared, with his performances in the domestic circuit and IPL, all of that is in his head that he has played such good innings but when you play a match at the international level you need to prepare well knowing which bowlers are there and to which bowler will you be hitting those big shots,” added RP Singh.
