One player who will be looked at closely is Shreyas Iyer. The 28-year-old right-handed batter has made his long-awaited comeback from injury. Iyer, last played for India during the India-Australia Test series before getting injured.

After having been injured for nearly four months, Shreyas Iyer found his name in the 17-man squad for the 2023 Asia Cup. The 28-year-old had missed the IPL 2023 and the World Test Championships. Speaking to the official channel for the Indian Cricket Board, Iyer said, “I am thrilled to be back, feel ecstatic, to be honest, to join the team and see all the happy faces- the compassion shown by all the players was fantastic.”

Iyer is a key part of Team India

Iyer is slated to be India’s long-standing answer for a permanent number four batter. The right-handed batter is slated to bat number four during the 2023 Asia Cup. If Iyer goes on to have a decent tournament, he will all but nail his place as the number four for the ODI World Cup.

He last played an ODI early this year when he was part of the series against Sri Lanka. Shreyas Iyer saw Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli smash centuries India scored 390 from their 50 overs. Iyer scored 38 runs with the help of 2 fours and a six in a 32-ball effort.

Meanwhile, team India is sweating it out to leave no stone unturned for the 2023 Asia Cup. India has won the tournament six times and will be gunning for their 7th title. First up, they face Pakistan who have just become the World Number 1 side in ODI cricket.

Pakistan has been playing in Sri Lanka first in a short test series against the Sri Lankan side winning the series 2-0. This was followed by the short three-match ODI series against Afghanistan which Pakistan won 3-0.
