Ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the series. He sustained a back injury during a practice session on January 17, a day ahead of the first ODI in Hyderabad. The right-hander has been one of the in-form batters for the team in the last year or so. In 2022, the Mumbaikar played 17 games and amassed 724 runs at an average of 55.69 including a hundred.

In the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, Iyer had a decent series with 94 runs in three games. He couldn’t replicate the last year’s form as the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli scored the most runs for the team. Meanwhile, the team has suffered a body blow as one of their important players in the middle-order, Iyer has been ruled out of the series.

After Shreyas was ruled out, he has been advised to reach the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the recovery process.

After the development, the Indian Cricket Board issued a statement announcing the replacement. As per the statement, Rajat Patidar from Madhya Pradesh has been named in the squad. Notably, the team also has the services of Suryakumar Yadav, who played only one ODI against Sri Lanka.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as replacement for Shreyas Iyer.
