India was scheduled to face England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on July 1, 2022, for that fifth rescheduled Test match. On the eve of this match, it was confirmed that Rohit Sharma will not lead the team as he tested Covid-19 positive. Hence, Jasprit Bumrah got the opportunity to lead his country in this match.

On the other hand, England was in full form as they just defeated the Kiwis in a three-match Test series on their home soil. Under a new captain, Ben Stokes, and a head coach, Brendon McCullam England looked a class apart during that series. Hence, they were looking to continue that momentum against India also to avoid a series loss against them. India was already leading this series by 2-1 from last year.

Speaking about the match, England won the toss and opted for bowling first. While batting first, India batters faced trouble from England pacers as they were at 98 runs for five wickets in 28 overs. Then, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja played brilliantly as they put up a partnership of 222 runs for the sixth wicket. India ended day one with a score of 338 runs by losing seven wickets only. Rishabh Pant was the hero for his knock of 146 runs off 111 balls only while Jadeja was holding another side strongly with his gritty 83* run knock so far.

During Pant’s fifth hundred in his career, he broke many records as his partnership with Jadeja was also the highest one on English soil for the sixth wicket. Here are three records that Rishabh pant broke during his mammoth innings against England in the Test match:

This 24-year-old wicketkeeper batter of India scored his hundred off 89 balls only. It was the fastest century in this longest format of the game at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Along with it, this ton was the fastest century by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests.

Previously, it was held by MS Dhoni when he scored a hundred off 93 balls. Speaking overall, it was the second-fastest Test ton by an Indian on England soil. Mohammad Azharuddin holds the record of scoring the fastest hundred in just 87 balls at Lord’s in 1990.
