India’s opening batter Shubman Gill has hit his second consecutive hundred in the ongoing first ODI against New Zealand. His previous hundred came against Sri Lanka in the last of the three-match series. Notably, the game was played last week. Meanwhile, in the ongoing game, the 2018 U19 World Cup winner has been making the most of the opportunity he has got.

He scored his first 12 runs with three fours in 18 balls. The right-hander scored his first single in the seventh over of the innings. Two overs later, the Punjab player was back to what he started as hit two back-to-back fours. Even after Rohit Sharma got out in the 13th over, Gill still hit two fours in the next over against Mitchell Santner.

In the 15th over too, the Gujarat player in the Indian T20 League hit two fours. Two overs later, Gill edged the ball but was dropped by stand-in skipper Tom Latham behind the stumps. Notably, the Kiwi also let go of the opportunity off stumping out the batter. As they say, dropped chances might prove costly in the end.

Well, this is exactly what happened as Shubman Gill went on to score his second consecutive ODI hundred. At this point, he had hit 14 fours and two sixes.

Shubman Gill converts his third ODI hundred into a maiden double hundred

In the 30th over, when the opening batter scored his hundred, it was unthinkable that he would get to a double hundred. Seven over later, Henry Shipley dropped a caught and bowled chance. At this point, Gill was batting at 124 runs. The Fazilka-born player made them pay as he scored his maiden double with five sixes in the 48th and 49th over of the innings. In the 49th over, Gill hit three back-to-back sixes to reach his maiden double hundred. With this, he is the fifth Indian to reach the ODI double hundred after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan.
