Another reason for the ODI cricket to go on the back burner was the ongoing 2019-21 cycle of the tournament. The tournament was in progress before it was halted for good four months due to the pandemic. The World Cricket Governing Council didn’t postpone the final.
This is the reason teams started playing more Test series to have a chance to climb up the ladder. Even the teams such as India, New Zealand, Australia, and England prioritized the longest format to play the final. Only the first two teams qualified for the game.
