5. Removal of batting and bowling powerplays
There was a time in the ODI format when apart from mandatory powerplay (first 10 overs), bowling and batting powerplay (five overs each) were part of the game. Teams had the choice of taking them accordingly. The bowling powerplay was removed in late 2012.
Three years later, the batting powerplay was also removed. Now, the teams have only one powerplay (mandatory one). Apart from that, the game becomes monotonous for most of the time which is why fans sometimes switch to other channels.
