‘India could well be one of the favorites, but…’ – Ravichandran Ashwin picks his favorites to win 2023 ODI World Cup
The 2023 ODI World Cup is creating enthusiasm among all cricket fans in the world. The former cricketers and experts are so hooked up for the tournament and are following the updates of the tournament like schedules, probable players, venues, and so on. With the tournament set to begin in October, the experts are giving their opinions about the favourites to win the Trophy.
Many experts and former ODI World Cup winners like Ricky Ponting, Eoin Morgan, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Glenn Mcgrath picked their semifinalists and the favourites to win the tournament. Most of them have similar opinions about the Top 4. The Indian cricketer and former World Cup winner, Ravichandran Ashwin, is the latest to give his opinion about the favourites to win the tournament.
The Indian off-spinner picked Australia as the favourite to win the tournament and did not rule out the chances of the Indian team. “Going into the ODI World Cup, Australia is one of the favourites. I know people around the world cricket will keep saying India is a favourite. In fact, all the cricketers around the world will use this as a strategy and say India is the favourite before every ICC event,” said Ashwin.
‘World cricket’s landscape has changed’ – Ashwin
The 36-year-old said that cricketers around the world use the strategy of calling India the favourites to reduce pressure on themselves. “They use this strategy to reduce the pressure on themselves and put extra pressure on us. India could well be one of the favourites, but Australia is also a powerhouse,” remarked the former World Cup winner on his YouTube channel.
The Indian star spinner recalled how the demographics of cricket have changed over the years. Ashwin said that West Indies was the powerhouse before the 1987 World Cup and Australia has become the one since then. “I think world cricket’s landscape changed from the West Indies being the powerhouse after the 1987 World Cup. We came close in 1987 as well. But after that, Australia became the powerhouse of World cricket” said the Indian star cricketer.
