‘India zyada better highways banaata hai’ – Fans react as Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram help South Africa smash ODI World Cup record
The South African batters were a part of the run feast in Arun Jaitley stadium, Delhi. The batting trio of Quinton De Kock, Rassie Van Der Dussen, and Aiden Markram all scored hundreds and helped proteas to break the ODI World Cup record, which stayed intact in the last 8 years. South Africa now has the record for the highest team score in the biggest cricket tournament.
Batting first, South Africa lost the wicket of Temba Bavuma early. But that did not stop them from being responsible for the run feast. Van Der Dussen played the role of anchor to perfection, which allowed De Kock to unleash his aggressive form in the other end. The two batters scored runs for fun. For the second wicket, the batters were involved in a 204-run partnership for the second wicket, which revived the South African innings.
The wicketkeeper batter scored 100 runs in 84 balls, which included 12 fours and 3 sixes. On the other hand, Van Der Dussen scored 108 runs in 110 balls, that included 13 fours and 2 sixes. But the carnage was yet to start at that point. It began after the entry of the South African captain Aiden Markram. The South African number 4 tormented the bowlers without mercy.
Aiden Markram and South Africa smash ODI World Cup records
Markram was ruthless and found good support at the other end from the likes of David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen. Markram was highly aggressive and found the gaps well. Most of his runs came through boundaries and with very less number of dot balls. In his stay in the middle, Markram scored 106 runs in just 54 balls. Bowlers had no answer to Markram and just helplessly became victims.
Enroute, Markram became the batter with the fastest World Cup hundred in ODIs. He got to the milestone in just 49 balls. Klaasen and Miller finished well for South Africa, which propelled the African side to a mammoth total of 428 runs on the board. It is now the highest score by a team in the history of the ODI World Cup. It seemed like sky was the limit.
