Hyderabad and Gujarat locked horns in the 21st match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The match was a rather one sided affair in the end.

Gujarat was invited to bat first after Hyderabad won the toss. Gujarat’s start was brisk but they kept losing wickets. Within the 8th over of the innings, they were 3 down for 64 runs. Hardik Pandya and David Miller steadied Gujarat’s progress with a 40 runs partnership, before Miller was dismissed for 12 off 15 deliveries by Marco Jansen in the 14th over. Abhinav Manohar joined the skipper and the duo put together a brisk 50 runs partnership. Manohar was dismissed for 35 off 21 and was dismissed by Bhuvneswar Kumar. Hardik remained unbeaten at the opposite end till the end of the innings. Pandya played a steady knock of 50 runs from 42 deliveries and guided his team to a total of 162 runs from their 20 overs. Bhuvneswar Kumar and T Natarajan picked up 2 wickets each for Hyderabad.

Hyderabad got solid start from their openers. Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson stitched a partnership of 64 runs for the first wicket, before Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for 42 off 32 deliveries. Rahul Tripathi joined the skipper in the middle and  looked to continue what Sharma was doing. He looked to be the aggressor while Williamson continued playing the anchor role for the team. But in the 14th over of the innings Tripathi had to walk off the pitch with an apparent hamstring pull and Nicholas Pooran replaced him at the crease. At the end of the 15th over Hyderabad was 116 for 1, needing 47 runs off last 30 balls. the equation looked easy with 9 wickets still in hand.

The golden arm of the Gujarat skipper, Hardik Pandya came into play as he dismissed his counter part Kane Williamson on the first delivery of the 17th over. Williamson played a captain’s knock scoring 57 runs off 46 deliveries. He hit 2 fours and 4 sixes in the innings. As Williamson walked back, it appeared as if the match had another twist left in it. Nicholas Pooran however, ensured that Hyderabad does not slip in the chase and scored 34 off 18 deliveries as Hyderabad won the match by 8 wickets with 5 balls remaining in the match. Gujarat’s winning streak in the tournament comes to a halt as they face their first defeat of the season.
