Delhi faced squared off against Lucknow in the 45th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Much unlike the last few games in the tournament, it turned out to be a high-scoring thriller.

Lucknow won the toss in the match and decided to bat first. They has a blazing start to their inning as the openers were looking in good touch. Quinton de Kock scored 23 runs off 13 deliveries before he was dismissed in the fifth over of the innings. The team’s score at this stage was 42 runs, as Deepak Hooda walked out to bat. He got together with skipper KL Rahul and put together a partnership of 95 runs in just 61 balls. This partnership set the foundation of a 200-plus score for Lucknow. Hooda was the second wicket to fall in the 15th over of the innings at a score of 137 runs. He played a brilliant knock of 52 runs from 34 balls hitting six fours and one six.

KL Rahul continued from there and was taking his team to a formidable total. But he was dismissed in the 19th over of the innings after he played a knock of 77 runs from 51 deliveries. His departure coupled with the fact that Marcus Stoinis (17 of 16) was finding it hard to middle the ball kept Lucknow from reaching the 200 mark. They were able to put on a huge total of 195 runs but it was 10-15 runs of what they could have achieved had Stoinis fired. Shardul Thakur was the only wicket-taker for Delhi picking up all the three wickets that fell.

Delhi started poorly losing two wickets early during their chase. Prithvi Shaw (5 of 7) and David Warner (3 of 4) were dismissed within the third over of the innings and this left Delhi reeling at 13 for 2. But Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant played a counter-attacking brand of cricket and gave Delhi the momentum in the chase. The duo scored 61 runs off 25 deliveries before Marsh was dismissed in the eighth over of the innings. Delhi’s score at this stage was 73 runs and it was soon 86 for four as Lalit Yadav got out in the ninth over. But the skipper Rishabh Pant was in a heavenly touch and was taking on the bowlers keeping Delhi in the hunt.

Rovman Powell partnered with Pant and the duo started to shift the balance of the match in favor of Delhi. But Pant was dismissed in the 13th over of the innings by Mohsin Khan. He scored 44 runs off 30 deliveries hitting seven fours and one six. As the 15th over of the innings culminated Delhi was at 135 for four needing 61 runs off the last five overs. Powell was going string in the middle and with the likes of Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur in the bank, the equation looked achievable. But it was Mohsin Khan who bowled a brilliant 17th over. he just conceded four runs in the over and picked up the important wickets of Rovman Powell and Shardul Thakur. The rest of the equation was too much for the lower order batters of Delhi. They finished at 189 runs and lost the match by 6 runs. Mohsin Khan was the best bowler for Lucknow picking up 4 for 16 from his quota of four overs. This was Lucknow’s seventh win the tournament of 10 matches, While Delhi lost their fifth in nine matches.
