In the 68th match of the Indian T20 League 2022, Rajasthan squared off against Chennai. On a Brabourne pitch that looked to slow down with the course of the match, the fans were treated to a low-scoring thriller.

Chennai won the toss and decided to bat first in the match. They were rocked early as Ruturaj Gaikwad (2 of 6) was dismissed in the first over by Trent Boult. But after this Moeen Ali raised a storm in the middle where he gave real momentum to Chennai’s innings. Although wickets kept falling at one end Moeen kept the scoring rate up. After the end of the 10 overs, Chennai was stationed at 94 for 3 and looked like, they would reach a formidable total. But in the second half of the innings, Chennai drastically lost momentum and the batters found it hard to get going.

Moeen Ali himself found it tough to bat with the same fluency he was doing in the earlier part of his knock. At the other end, MS Dhoni was also looking rusty and the Rajasthan bowlers were strangling the batters. MSD was ultimately dismissed in the 19th over after he scored 26 runs off 28 balls. Moeen Ali soon followed Dhoni as he was dismissed for 93 from 57 balls. It was on the back of Ali’s initial onslaught that Chennai managed to reach a total of 150 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs. Obed McCoy was the pick of the bowlers for Rajasthan as he picked up 2 wickets for 20 runs from his 4 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal also picked up two wickets for 26 runs from his 4 overs.

Rajasthan’s start to the chase was also shaky as they lost Jos Buttler (2 of 5) in the second over of the innings. Their score at this stage was 16 for one in 1.4 overs. Sanju Samson and Yashashvi Jaiswal steadied the ship from there on with a 51 runs partnership before Samson (15 of 20) was dismissed in the ninth over. The score for Rajasthan at this stage was 67 for 2 in 8.3 overs. His wicket was soon followed by the fall of Devdutt Padikkal (3 of 9) and much like Chennai, Rajasthan was losing their way in the middle-overs. However, Ravichandran Ashwin came in and started to change the momentum for his team. He was supported by Yashasvi Jaiswal and the duo were looking comfortable in the middle. But against the run of play Jaiswal (59 of 44) was dismissed in the 15th over by Prashant Solanki. As the 15h over the innings concluded Rajasthan was stationed at 104 for 4 requiring 47 runs off the last 30 balls. With Shimron Hetmyer at the crease, the equation looked easy for Rajasthan to achieve.

It was Solanki who picked up Hetmyer in the 17th over and shifted the balance in  Chennai’s favor once again. But Ashwin and Riyan Parag decided not to go down without a fight. They played brilliant little cameos and took Rajasthan sloe to the target. In the last two overs Rajasthan required 20 runs at a required rate of 10 runs per over and the match was on the balance. But Ashwin kept his calm scoring 40 runs off 23 deliveries and took his team across the line. Rajasthan won the match by 5 wickets with two balls remaining in the match. This was Rajasthan’s 9th win in 14 matches and it also ensured a top two finish for them, while Chennai lost their 10th match in 14 outings.
