India wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan is reported to open the batting against Australia alongside skipper Rohit Sharma. The latter is making a comeback after being rested for the first two ODIs. In his absence, KL Rahul led the team and they have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series. Meanwhile, in the last game (to be played on September 27), Kishan might get to open the batting.
Apparently, Shubman Gill, who needed 22 runs to dethrone Babar Azam from the number one ODI rankings, has been rested for the game. He has been sent to Guwahati where the team will play their first warm-up game against England. Apart from him, Axar Patel, who has sustained left quadriceps strain and Shardul Thakur, who played the first ODIs will also not play this game.
Meanwhile, Gill not traveling to Rajkot for the third ODI means that Kishan will open the batting as reported by PTI. Apparently, the team doesn’t have a back-up opening batter for this series.

Meanwhile, the former India U19 skipper has opened the batting for India before. In his first ODI as an opener, he scored the fastest double hundred ever in the format. He took only 126 balls to do so and at the end of 35 overs, he was batting at 210. Had he batted the entire innings, he might have reached an unthinkable 300-run mark in a 50-over format.
However, apart from this, his technique at this spot has been found wanting in the last few months, whether against Australia, IPL 2023, or West Indies. Since his transition as a middle-order batter in the Asia Cup 2023, he has been doing well. It will be another opportunity to use his good batting form at the top. Not to forget, the Aussies have had a series to forget so far as they lost the first two games by significant margins.
