Season eight of the Pakistan Super League got off to a ‘firey’ start as the floodlights of the Multan Cricket Stadium caught fire. The incident happened during the opening ceremony of the tournament. The video of the unfortunate incident has been going viral on the internet. Thankfully, the fire firefighters arrived at the scene and doused the fire, and reportedly, no one got hurt.

This led to a delay in the opening game between the last year’s finalists, Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans. Meanwhile, the fans have taken the opportunity to bash the Pakistan Cricket Board. As the incident is rare, the fans have been bashing the board and the tournament organizers for the incident.

Pakistan Super League defending champions got off to a winning start

Meanwhile, the unfortunate incident didn’t deter last year’s finalists, Multan and Lahore. The defending champions, Qalandars were asked to bat first after losing the toss. Fakhar Zaman’s 66, Sikander Raza (19*), and Hussain Talat (20) helped the team reach 175/6. In reply, the Mohammad Rizwan-led Sultans lost the game by one run. The skipper of the 2021 winners, Multan led from the front as he scored 75 runs.

However, he didn’t get enough support from the other end after he and Shan Masood added 100 runs for the first wicket. Despite being 100 for no loss, the former champions managed to lose the game

“We got off to a good start. We have many options with the ball. Credit to Zaman for the way he finished it off. The message to the team was that one wicket would bring us back. We didn’t field well, will try to get better at it,” Lahore skipper Shaheen Afridi said after the game.

“The way we were going it looked like we would get there easily. But their bowling did exactly what it’s known for. It’s cricket, it happens. They had two top bowlers in their side, they open the bowling for Pakistan and credit to them for delivering at a crucial time,” Multan skipper Rizwan said.
