‘Jaise hi mark Waugh yaad aaya shuru hote hain…’ – Salman Butt opens up on Shubman Gill’s innings vs Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh are facing off in the second Test and Day 2 on December 15, Thursday, was dominated by the KL Rahul-led team as they restricted the Bangla Tigers to 133/8 on the back of three-fors from Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. As things stand, India’s first innings was a great one and it was the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Shreyas Iyer who stood up for the team. 

However, fans expected steady innings from India’s young star Shubman Gill but in vain as the talented batter contributed only 20 runs to the Indian scoreboard. Former Pakistani cricketer Salman Butt opened up on Gill and said that the Indian batter becomes careless the moment people start admiring and comparing him to veteran cricketers. 

“It was careless. Test cricket me aap sweep maarte ho aur slip pe catch dete ho. Shubman Gill itna achha lagta hai khelte hue, aaj bhi usne do cuts jo maare, kya baat hai. Jaise hi Mark Waugh aur Damien Martyn yaad aana shuru hote hain, vaise hi out. (You play sweep in Test cricket and give away a catch at slip. Shubman Gill looks so good, the moment you feel like you’re watching a Mark Waugh or a Damien Martyn, he gets out),” Butt was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

Further, the former Pakistani skipper claimed that the right-handed batter cannot be getting out for the 30s all the time and said that Gill needs to up his game, by enjoying his stay in the crease and making the most of the opportunities that the team management fetch him with. 

“Ajeeb kaam karte hain. When you start watching him, you start to like him. But he needs to carry on to make big runs. Ye cute 30-40s karke out ho jaate hian. Ye saari cheezein ek certain time tak log pasand karte hain. He needs to make big scores. He needs to think about it. Consistently chances mil rahe hain toh unko avail karein. Chhoti sweeps jaise ajeeb-o-gareeb shots naa khelein. Aapke paas saamne shots hain, itna time hai, enjoy karein. (It’s weird. You can’t score these 30-40 runs for long. If you’re getting consistent chances, you need to make the most out of them. You have shots at the front, you have time, you need to enjoy your game),” Butt was quoted as saying further.
