Team India is currently busy playing the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. However, they started well by winning both the group stage matches. But, in the ‘Super Four’, they lost both the matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Now, they are on the verge of getting knocked out of the tournament with one more match to go against Afghanistan.

But, Indian bowlers have failed miserably throughout this tournament. Apart from the first match against Pakistan, they failed to all ten wickets of any opposition. As Jasprit Bumrah got ruled out of the tournament for his back injury, India went with an inexperienced bowling line-up. Now, reports are there that the Indian selectors might look to call back veteran pacer Mohammed Shami for the upcoming T20I series at the home against Australia.

Mohammad Shami could earn a surprise recall depending on the injury status of Jasprit Bumrah

While talking to InsideSport, a selection committee member said that they will think about Shami’s inclusion ahead of the 20-20 World Cup. But, it all depends on the injury status of his fellow pacer, Jasprit Bumrah.

He said: “There is no decision to make until we have a clear idea of Bumrah’s recovery timeframe. He will be back at NCA this week for an injury assessment. Once we have a clear idea, we can take a call on whether we need an experienced pacer for T20 World Cup,”.

However, during the Asia Cup also, former players like Madan Lal warned selectors for not considering Shami. In an interaction with Sportskeeda, he claimed that Shami is the best bowler after Jasprit Bumrah across all formats. “Shami should definitely be in the team for the T20 World Cup. He’s our best bowler after Bumrah. I would look for a bowler who could get me wickets. I don’t want bowlers who would only look to contain runs. Batters will keep scoring runs in this format. The only way to stem the flow of runs is to take wickets.” he concluded.
